* A "composite" sculptural mural
7.5 ft. x 35 ft. w., Scott Carpenter Middle School, Thornton,
Colorado, 2005
This mural was executed with between 12 to 16 middle
school students. These youths participated in all phases
of this project. Using 1/4" birch
plywood, they cut, assembled, primed, textured, and prepared the major
background form as well as the many individual sections which form the "composite" whole.
Each student designed and painted a section which was installed with
all others to compose our collective mural theme.
My role was in directing, encouraging, and assisting the students. A
central area depicts a grouping of multi-colored hands upraising an enormous
Morning Glory flower. From the flower emerge three youths, two of these
being portraits of actual students. The hands represent parents, teachers,
and others who nurture, educate, and install wholesome values in young
people.
Our purpose in selecting the mural subject was to instigate discussion
and understanding among students as to their special value in life. We
felt that youths who understand and respect themselves will understand
and respect others.
Upon the mural's completion, an unveiling ceremony was held. Students,
parents, teachers, the school principal, as well as the District Superintendent
attended our special event.
Each of our mural team members wrote a description of the mural, the
experience of working together, and the personal wisdom derived from
painting such a theme.
Our "composite" sculptural mural was installed
in the school cafeteria.
